My name is Cori Spade and I am a rising senior at Meredith in the fashion design department.
I became interested in fashion when I was in high school. I had always loved fashion, but I did not know that I enjoyed sewing. I took a sewing class in high school to fill one of my electives and I just immediately fell in love with sewing and designing. Before I graduated from high school, I had taken two more sewing classes and when Christmas came around, I knew exactly what to ask Santa for.... a sewing machine! I knew when I went to college that designing was absolutely what I wanted to do. Since then, my love for fashion has grown exponentially. What could be more awesome than to have a career in fashion!?
It is extremely difficult to name one designer that I love, but my idols are Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig, the talented designers behind Marchesa. They create the most stunning and beautiful pieces of art that I have ever seen!
I wanted to get involved with WOLC, not only because I love designing, but because lung cancer is a prevalent and constantly growing concern. I wanted to become a part of an event that can inspire so many people in North Carolina to raise awareness and take action against lung cancer. This fashion show will catch the attention of a new demographic, college students and young adults, and it can become the change that needs to happen to find a cure. We hope for this show to become an event that will continue to grow and inspire so many more to take a stance against lung cancer.
Hope is a word that encompasses love and healing. It raises trust for a positive future and inspires people to take action in what they believe is right. Hope is never giving up on a dream.
Hi! My name is Katherine Fisher, and I am super excited to design for White Out Lung Cancer!
I am a recent addition to the Meredith College Alumnae, as I just graduated in May with my Bachelor of Science in Fashion Design and in Interior Design with a minor in Studio Art. I am from the beautiful mountains of Asheville, NC. I am currently an employee of the Marriott in downtown Raleigh. I plan on pursuing my Masters in Textile Design at NC State University.
My love for fashion started when I was a very little girl. I was obsessed with fashion and designers! I use to take my mom’s curtains and sheets and tried to make clothes out of them at a young age. I would always try not to get caught, because my mom would be upset that I attempted to hand sew two curtains together for what I thought was a very cute skirt. Little did she know that this would be my everlasting passion and I would want to pursue making clothes for the rest of my life. I grew up on Vogue and Harpers Bazaar. I could not wait to see what designers made next. I have always said that if you can make fashion art, than you are truly a fashion designer. My two favorite designers are Coco Chanel and Alexander Mcqueen. I mean I am in LOVE with their work and they are both two different designers. Chanel not only is an amazing role model, but a very talented, valued designer. She was one of the first female fashion designers of her time to put women into pants. She made statements with her clothes empowering women. Alexander Mcqueen was a true artist. You can just sit there and stare at one of his pieces and be completely captivated by his design and time consuming hand stitching. Both of these designers push and motivate me to become the best designer I can be.
The word “hope” means two p’s for me, prayer and positive attitude. I hope that we can raise a lot of money for the organization. I pray and that is my hope. White Out has inspired me to create garments that are angelic and whimsical. My inspirations are angels. With prayer, anything is possible.
I am currently 21 years old, from Apex, and going into my senior year at NC State as a Fashion Textile Management major. Designers that I consider my inspiration include Vera Wang, Max Azria, Betsey Johnson and Yves Saint Laurent. While I have been designing and making clothes since before high school, this is my first fashion show, and I'm excited!
last week, i shared a few of my favorite pieces from cousin couture. today, i have a little video to share with you. i visited the fuquay boutique last friday. not only were the girls incredibly friendly and welcoming, but i loved the clothes and the entire feel of the boutique. check out the video, and visit cousin couture on facebook.
stay tuned tomorrow as we check in with bryce at clothes hound!
Hello! I’m
Kristin Fowler and a 2011 graduate from Meredith College.
I’m a full-time
graphic and freelance designer. As a designer, regardless of medium and platform
of interest, I share an appreciation for like-minded thinkers and creative
processes. Therefore, my interest in fashion design is of no surprise.
However, as a
graphic designer, I’m in constant search of inspiration and various ways to
improve my skill set and detailed eye for design aesthetic. On any given
weekday, you can find me searching for informational blogs, quotes and websites
as well as geekin’ out over typefaces, color, compositions and articles about
design and its impact on the world.
My consistent
motivation and passion derives from the Raleigh community where I am a member of
AIGA Raleigh and on their elected board. I serve as the Co-Director for Emerging
Designer programming as well as being a board member of the Contemporaries at
the North Carolina Museum of Art. Within these roles, I’m privileged to engage
with community members and have the ability to soak up the creative talent of
what the Triangle has to offer. I sincerely enjoy being a part of something
greater and utilizing my talent to serve the good of those around me. From this,
I’ve found a sincere personal satisfaction of encouraging design-driven social
change.
As with every
designer or creative, there is always someone to whom you look to as a role
model. With that said, my favorite designer is Massimo Vignelli. Vignelli is an
Italian designer and has set the standard for what great design is — you’ll find
his design work ranges from furniture to packaging all the way to environmental,
product and simple graphic design. I often share this quote, “The
life of a designer is a life of fight: fight against the
ugliness.”
Regardless of the wording, the interpretation is what is of honest meaning:
ugliness being aesthetic, worldviews, personal hang-ups, etc. In order to make a
change, you have to fight for what you believe in. Therefore, this led me to the
involvement with the White Out Lung Cancer Fashion Show.
When
Jordan asked me to be involved and to contribute design work for the event, I
was thrilled. This provided me with a realistic opportunity to design for good
and be inspired by her story, amongst many others. My grandmother passed away
from lung cancer without having smoked a single cigarette in her entire life. In
honor of Jordan’s mother and my grandmother, I couldn’t turn down the
opportunity to spread the word about such a meaningful event and encourage
others to do the same.
With
that said, being a designer, instills a sense of hope for the future. A hope
that secures a sense of peace in the minds of others that there will be a cure
for some of the most harmful diseases in the world. My hope is that I’ve
encouraged others to spread the message of lung cancer and feel the impact that
it makes on families around the world — to establish a support network of those who’ve felt this disease turn their lives upside down but to live with hope
knowing that a cure is in the future of those who aspire to design for change.
Please head over here to visit Kristin and check out her fantastic work for KFowler Design.
Hey! I am a North Carolina native, born and raised in the Bull-City, aka Durham!
I’m inspired by Japanese street fashion, vintage sewing patterns, fashions from old movies from the 30’s to 50’s, and finally, 90’s fashion! I believe in cruelty-free fashion, and I refuse to use leather and fur in my designs and lifestyle choices. I have a couple of fashion shows under my belt, but I am looking forward to this one because it’s for such a great cause, and it’s so unique! Who else does an all-white fashion show?
For this show, I was majorly inspired by the concept of using all white, sheer, and ivory fabrics. I am a designer who relies heavily on bold patterns and bright colour choices, so this was a drastic change and challenge for me! I wanted to replace the contrast between colour and pattern that I normally use, with a contrast between textures and weight of fabric.
we're bringing you another one of our wonderful boutiques today!
"Clothes Hound is the creation of Bryce Batts. Loving clothes and fashion
since childhood, opening a boutique has always been her dream. She had a
vision of opening a store that had hard to find fashions at reasonable
prices, such as Ryu, C. Luce, Gentle Fawn, Jamie Kreitman, Big Buddha,
French Connection, Free People, Karlie and other dresses, tops and bottoms. She wanted a one stop shop, offering everything from shoes to jewelry to clothing.
Bryce’s combined fashion and business sense led her to open Clothes Hound, a unique and affordable boutique located in Raleigh, NC!"

Hi
everyone! I’m 21 years old, recently engaged to my childhood sweetheart, and I’m
also a rising senior at Meredith College. My major is Fashion Design, and I am
from the Raleigh area. I love everything about this city as well as its people.
I have always loved fashion and knew from the very beginning that I would want
to be a part of its world. After studying abroad in Paris last year and
traveling the world, I found myself becoming immersed in different aspects of
design as well as its process. I am very attracted to light and delicate fabrics
and designs. My favorite designer is Vera Wang. I feel that she has a wonderful
design aesthetic, and I love everything she creates.
I
wanted to get involved with White Out Lung Cancer because my best friend, Katy
Clary, lost her dad to lung cancer when we were in high school. During that time,
it was very important to me to love and support my best friend as well as her
family. Now that it’s only a few years later, it’s important to me to show my
support and to help raise awareness to the public in the best way that I know
how. I couldn’t be more thankful to have her, as well as her mother, in my life
and to share my talents in a form that gives back.
Hope
is a very expressive desire. It’s an expectation as well as a trust that an
outcome will be in your favor. In midst of a tragedy, it sheds light on the
possibility of another tomorrow without loss. Some people continue to fight for
hope, while others search for the hope of a cure. One day there will be a cure
and the word hope will no longer be needed. Continue to fight, raise awareness,
and search for the cure.
Here
are some of my pictures of my beginning fabrics:
on sunday, our designers met the models for fittings. model fittings are an essential part of a successful show. we can't thank models for charity enough for providing models for the show. models for charity is an organization of professional men and women in the triangle who raise money for local charities through modeling. a big thanks to dr. yang at meredith college for allowing us to use the fashion lab for the fittings. anna edwards, designer, took these photos. thanks, anna!

we have been blessed with a few rather awesome sponsors, and today, i'm going to introduce you to one of our boutiques!
cousin couture is located in fuquay-varina, but they will ship to just about anywhere, so if you aren't in the area, and you fall in love with their fabulous clothes (and prices!), you can order online.
according to the 'dolls' at cousin couture, they opened their boutique to help fashionistas look great for less. "this concept is brought to life with our theme for our boutique known as
"the cousin to couture". we want our clothes to be part of the couture
family in their design and style, but the cousin in terms of price!"
now, i just can't help but share a few of my favorite pieces from their online shop with you!! remember, they have PLENTY more to look at in their brick-and-mortar store, so don't forget to stop by and say hello.
colored skinnies are the way to go this year!! the dolls are definitely adding a little bit of fun to their wardrobes by wearing these bold, smart skinnies! add that adorable 'see a sweetheart' top and some black wedges for a classy look.
see! i told you that they only have the cutest pieces at the boutique! keep checking back as we highlight more of our sponsors and introduce you to a few of the faces behind the scenes.
Hello Everyone! I am a rising senior at Meredith College majoring in Fashion Design and minoring in Marketing. I have been interested in fashion my entire life, but never thought of it as a career until my sophomore year at Meredith. I have never been more satisfied with a decision in my life. Studying fashion has led me to meet the most wonderful people and have truly amazing experiences and opportunities. It is a field that I will forever be happy in. My future career hopes are to own a bridal boutique. I am already heading in that direction with an internship at a local bridal boutique in Raleigh. My favorite designers would mostly be bridal designers like Alfred Angelo and Vera Wang.
Besides being a fashion designer, I am also a musician. I play oboe in the Meredith College Sinfonietta and flute in Flutopia, the Meredith College Flute Ensemble. I am a resident of Durham, North Carolina and a die-hard Duke fan. I have to be one of the only Meredith students who are not big time NCSU fans.
I wanted to get involved in White Out Lung Cancer because of the great cause it is for. I have not been directly affected by lung cancer but have been directly directed by other cancers. Many women in my family have had breast cancer. My grandmother has had breast cancer twice and I could not imagine my life without her. So, finding a cure for cancer even a cancer that I have not been directly affected by means a lot to me.
The word hope to me is about never giving up. Hope means that there is possibility that something good will come even if a tragedy has to happen before the good. One day cancer will be cured for good. People continuously fight cancer because they never lose hope; they never give up.
WHY DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN FASHION DESIGN? From Raleigh, I became interested in fashion design around the time of high school and have been involved in it ever since. I love it!
WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FROM? I love to travel and see the traditional dress of other countries and if possible, incorporate them into my designs. I also enjoy reading and thinking about all of the amazing things I would love to do in my future.
WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE DESIGNER? The designer I respect most is Christian Dior. His designs are always so beautiful and well crafted. They are incredible and make the women that wear them look incredible as well. Feminine and chic. Sleek and sexy. He creates works of art out of everything I love abut fashion.
WHAT DOES HOPE MEAN TO YOU? Hope, to me, means the future. If you have hope, then you want to keep on going, you want to work hard and keep on fighting whatever battles you must until the very end.
We are just 24 days from the 1st Annual White Out Lung Cancer Fashion Show.
My name is Jordan Jaked, and I am the chair for this exciting event!
That's me there on the left! :)
I developed a true appreciation for fashion in my teens when I first saw a Badgley Mischka gown; it was breathtaking, and I knew that I wanted to create. I began college as a fashion design major but ended up discovering that my passion was in costume design. Needless to say, I still have a healthy obsession with fashion.
In February 2011, I lost my mom to lung cancer. I was a senior in college preparing to graduate, and she had only been diagnosed five months before she passed. Lung cancer steals more lives each year than breast, ovarian, and uterine cancers combined. It is an 'invisible' killer, often sneaking up on patients and only being discovered once it has progressed too far for treatment.
Me and my mom in the summer of 2009
I began to volunteer with the North Carolina Lung Cancer Partnership in the fall of 2011, as I was applying to graduate schools and discovering was post-graduate life could be like! I enjoyed the events that the partnership was holding, but I wanted to start something new that would honor my mom and raise awareness amongst a new demographic.
The Pam's Pearls Team from the 2011 Free to Breathe 5K in Raleigh, NC
The idea to produce the White Out Lung Cancer Fashion Show sprouted in my mom's memory and grew as I talked about it with fellow designers and lung cancer warriors. I hope that this will be an event that inspires hope and brings awareness this year and for many years to follow. I have a wonderful team of designers, artists, and local women (and my dad!) with help from many great local sponsors! We have spent the last few months creating the fashion show, which will be held on June 15th at Burning Coal Theatre featuring local wine, treats, silent auction items, boutiques, and local designers, and we hope to see you'll join us as we WHITE OUT LUNG CANCER.
